The following tour brings visitors on a foliage-viewing route from the canal to Provincetown—and back. Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket are included too! These are approximate directions; use a map or GPS for specific details. Starting in the Upper Cape, drive Route 28A to take the Quisset Road route to Woods Hole, stopping at Quisset Harbor. Take Church Street, Surf Drive, and Scranton Avenue from Woods Hole to Falmouth Harbor. On the way to the Mid-Cape, drive through New Seabury in Mashpee. In Osterville, wind down through South Main Street to Centerville and take Craigville Beach Road to Hyannisport. Ocean Avenue to Hyannis continues past Sea Street Beach.
Visitors driving the coastal routes of the Cape and Islands can take in some spectacular views this Fall. Here, we’ve highlighted some specific areas to begin the journey.
In the Lower Cape, stop in Harwichport to glimpse Monomoy Island from Red River Beach. While driving from Chatham to South Orleans, don’t miss Pleasant Bay just off Route 28, and in Eastham, drive out to the Nauset coast. Explore the Province Lands in Provincetown at the Cape’s tip. As you return along the Cape’s bay side, stop at both Pamet in Truro and charming Wellfleet Harbor. Take the back roads to Rock Harbor from Eastham. In Brewster, take any route out to the bay, and in Dennis, cut off Route 6A to check out Sesuit Harbor. Following 6A, the route from Yarmouthport all the way to the canal—then along the length of the canal—features many scenic views.
On Martha’s Vineyard, drive from Menemsha to Gay Head, then to Edgartown Harbor, Katama Bay, and all of Chappaquiddick Island. On Nantucket, check out Madaket for views of Tuckernuck and Muskeget. For more spectacular scenery, drive across the moors along Polpis Road.
