Retirement can often spawn new careers, which was the case for Chris Ellis and his wife, Cheryl. “I had given her an earring-making kit when she retired and we soon discovered she had talent,” says Chris Ellis, owner of Cape Cod’s, The American Point of View.

After giving her jewelry pieces to friends and family and selling her designs at various craft fairs, it soon became evident the couple needed a storefront to showcase Cheryl’s designs. The husband and wife team decided to use a newly vacant space they owned to sell the jewelry. It wasn’t long before other artisans began inquiring about selling their wares in the space and a new consignment gallery was established.

Today, The American Point of View in West Dennis is recognized as a place to go for unique, one-of-a-kind pieces crafted by local artisans. “We wanted to make sure we were different from other consignment shops. After doing some research, we noticed there was nothing in the area dealing only in American-made items. We decided that would be our niche,” says Ellis. Many of the artisans, he says, are from Cape Cod.

The store sells everything from jewelry, to sculptures, to metal art, to blown-glass, to hand-knitted items. Despite representing more than 100 artisans, Ellis says there is no overlap. “Each artisan creates something different,” he says.

Nothing in the gallery is manufactured, Ellis notes, so the store is ever-changing. “If you see something you like, you had better buy it—chances are it will be gone if you wait,” he says.
