A Way to Garden, A Hands-on Primer for Every Season. By Margaret Roach.
Sissinghurst. Portrait of a Garden, By Jane Brown.
Well-Tended Perennial Garden, Planting & Pruning Techniques. By Tracy DiSabato-Aust.
Designing Borders. By Noel Kingsbury.

The season is upon us when the catalogues arrive. Most of my favorite seed companies are in New England with two exceptions—I’m fascinated with heirloom varieties of vegetables and pour over the catalogue from the nonprofit Seed Savers Exchange in Iowa and I stray as far as California for old fashioned poppies, fragrant sweet peas, and flowering vines from Renée’s Garden. Seeds from Italy, a Winchester, Massachusetts based company, is my very favorite seed company for truly tasty greens and glorious beans—their Lacinato kale is a must have—it sweetens with frost and we picked some Christmas Day for dinner with our Christmas goose. The deer jumped the garden fence later the same day and had a fine feast stripping the plants bare!
