Mal was one of the few American presenters at the First International Hydrangea Conference in Ghent, Belgium, in 2007. He is also speaks regularly to Heritage Museums and Gardens on Cape Cod, which recently added a Hydrangea Collection to the Sandwich destination’s extensive plantings. “It is a wonderful companion garden to their rhododendron collection,” says Mal. “Hydrangeas start to bloom as the last of the rhodies are finishing. The hydrangeas maintain a continuum of color.”
Mal has become such an authority in the hydrangea field that he is often called upon to lecture to garden clubs and to the American Hydrangea Society. His relationship with the American Hydrangea Society began shortly after his 60th birthday. For that milestone, Mary Kay and daughter Carol decided to throw him a party. The guest of honor, unbeknownst to Mal, was Penny McHenry, founder of the American Hydrangea Society.
