John Viola can plan a massive project, move tons of concrete, design like a madman, and does it all with the attitude of a kid on summer vacation. As the owner of Viola Associates in Hyannis, Viola and his team design, build, and install swimming pools, spas, outdoor lighting, water gardens, sprinklers, and irrigation systems. Another part of the business is dedicated to pool and spa maintenance.

Assisted by his wife, Allison, Viola often works 70 hours a week and loves his life. “I get up in the morning and look forward to the work,” he says.

Viola also loves a challenge. He recalls a recent project on Priscilla Beach in Plymouth, where the work began by knocking down a house and pool. He then installed a new 20-foot-by-40-foot pool that features a vanishing edge on two sides, along with a raised spa, multilevel decks, a gas fireplace in the middle of a fountain, and a patio with a fire ring. “We designed it from start to finish,” Viola says. “It was an unbelievably fun project.”
