As the guests tucked into a delicious dessert of Gianduja Palette with hazelnut ice cream, served with a superb 2005 Château Coutet Sauterne, redolent of honey, apricots, and almonds, diners were treated to a visit from  Toner, who chatted with both pleased diners and cheerful winemakers. Mark Goldweitz notes that the wine festival wouldn’t be what it is today were it not for this resourceful, knowledgeable, and endlessly cheerful man who has put Nantucket on the map with his fabulous event.

Terry Pommett “Denis is absolutely amazing, he’s unbelievably knowledgeable,” says Goldweitz. “He was the sommelier at the island’s Chanticleer restaurant for many years and he lives half the year on the island, and the rest of the year in France. He just seems to know everybody in the US and in France that’s important in the wine world. He and his wife, Susan, are miracle workers who somehow manage to put this festival together with great flair every year.”

Full to the brim with a superb meal and fine wine, the guests said goodbye and headed out into the warm, sea-scented Nantucket night. For many, the dinner was just a sweet Friday night prelude to a full weekend of Wine Festival wonders.
