When you ask John Viola what makes him most proud of his company, Viola Associates in Hyannis, he doesn’t hesitate. “I am proudest of my employees. My company wouldn’t be successful without our team,” says Viola, of the 30 to 40 seasonal and full-time workers at the irrigation, swimming pool design and installation company.

Viola says he never would have believed that the small irrigation business he started in 1984 would blossom into a well-known firm providing comprehensive services to customers Cape-wide as well as on the islands, and the South Shore. “We have grown a lot since then—and a lot of those people are still with me,” says Viola. “We have a great team; we are almost like a family.”

Viola says he started doing irrigation construction and maintenance, but over the last 15 years the company’s biggest area of growth has been in the design, construction, and maintenance of high-end swimming pools and spas. “The pool business now is about 70 percent of our business,” says Viola, who notes that the industry has changed for the better in the last decade.

“Pools today have a lot of customized features, for instance, with high-tech finishes. The controls for pools have also come a long way. The technology is really starting to bloom,” he says.

Aside from his staff—including his 27-year-old son who he hopes will run the company someday—Viola says he is proudest of the quality Viola Associates delivers. “Everywhere I go, people always say what a good job we are doing, and that just makes me proud of our team and the products we deliver,” he says.
