Orleans
Things to do
Nauset Marsh runs through Orleans and Eastham, and kayaking through it is an exciting way to experience the Cape. Like other marshes, Nauset is a vital habitat to shorebirds, wading birds, fish, and shellfish, and seals are known to meander through it as well. Rent a kayak at Goose Hummock (www.goose.com, 508-255-2620) on Town Cove and paddle from there to Nauset Marsh.
For all-things birding (seed, Christmas ornaments, carvings, etc.), stop in at Bird Watcher’s General Store (www.birdwatchersgeneralstore.com, 800-562-1512), where the staff will humor you with funny signs and corny jokes, and impress you with their local bird knowledge.
Still in the mood to browse? Head to the Hope Chest (508-255-5565) consignment shop for great deals on gently used, tasteful furniture and home furnishings. The Hope Chest supports the efforts of the Lower Cape Outreach Council, which runs a food pantry.
Beach it
You will easily get your exercise at Skaket Beach on Cape Cod Bay, where the flats run out for a mile at low tide. This beach doesn’t scrimp on extras and facilities; you’ll find a lengthy boardwalk, outdoor showers, changing room, snack bar, bike rack, and a 175-car parking lot.
