Truro
Things to do
Truro is the least densely populated town on Cape Cod, making for beautiful landscape views as you ramble about. Hike the Bearberry Hill trail, where bearberry bushes blanket the area and turn to a dramatic bronze in the fall. At the top of the hill, enjoy Pamet River Valley vistas and the vast seascape beyond.
Nearby is Truro Vineyards of Cape Cod (www.trurovineyardsofcapecod.com, 508-487-6200), where you can sample the hearty wines and tour the vineyard and winery.
Take in a film, listen to a reading, or enjoy a musical performance at the Payomet Performing Arts Center (www.ppactruro.org, 508-487-5400). The center is housed in a converted military base; last summer it hosted author and documentarian Sebastian Junger, among others.
Beach it
The raw energy from the pounding Atlantic surf at Ballston Beach, off South Pamet Road, is mesmerizing, as are the shadows cast by the high dunes behind it. But stay wary of the undertow in the strong surf. While a town sticker is required to park here, those arriving on foot and bicycle get in for free.
