From Metropolitan Refugees to Eastham Advocates
John Knight: I’m originally from a small town in Connecticut—I’m from Plainfield and Donna’s from Stamford. Before moving to Eastham, Donna and I lived outside of Hartford in a small town. I guess I function better away from humongous crowds. Six people is enough for me (laughs).
Donna had been vacationing on the Cape since she was little. We were married in 1963, and Labor Day weekend of ’64, we came out and stayed on Ocean View Drive in Wellfleet. The following year, we came out for another long weekend, then a week, then two weeks. I was teaching at a residential institution in Connecticut. We had no substitute teachers, so when somebody wasn’t in, everyone else got loaded up. One day I came home and got out the typewriter, pulled out a map, and typed out a letter of application to schools in every town on the Cape.
