Harvest Home

As I write this in early August, my vegetable garden is about to burst with tomatoes, squash, and basil. I have so many cucumbers that I plan to make jars of sweet pickles to give to out-of-town guests when they arrive on the Cape for our son’s September wedding. I will also be harvesting some sunflowers for the wedding—one variety that we planted is so tall it towers over my head. It has been an amazing summer for gardening—day after day of warm sunshine, followed by brief cooling showers. It is a perfect recipe for garden plentitude.

Harvest Home

The weather has also filled our beaches to the brim with happy campers and Cape and Islands shops and restaurants have been reaping the rewards of a beautiful summer by the sea. We had such a great response to our first ever August dining issue that we bring you more reviews in this issue, sending writers to restaurants from Mashpee to the Vineyard to give you tastes of some superb seaside cuisine. Everywhere our reviewers went the word was the same—it’s been a bustling summer for business on the Cape and Islands.

Also in this issue we give you several stories that showcase our spectacular fall season, from insider’s takes on fun festivals and special events, to tips on the best places to bird watch during the fall and winter. We take you along on the fascinating journey of a local boatbuilder. Ted Box, 67, is working with a Martha’s Vineyard community to resurrect a classic boat that will serve as both a working vessel and floating cultural center for the good of all islanders. And we share the inspirational story of two young Cape Codders who are turning yard sale finds into treasured furniture for delighted homeowners.

We hope you have been able to share in the glories of this Cape Cod and Islands summer. If you have not been lucky enough to soar over the bridges or ride the ferries to this splendid seaside world yet this year, come see us this fall. I promise your spirit will reach sky high, just like my September-loving sunflowers.

Come home again soon!
