A Primer on Cape Cod's Autumnal Cuisine
For anyone who loves to eat, all four seasons feature stellar, must-have foods. But fall food is special. Summer gardens are still yielding bountiful crops, classic fall foods like apples are peaking in freshness, and temperatures have cooled enough to make cooking pleasurable. Here are four foods to enjoy before winter winds blow…
Apples may be the perfect food. Portable, crunchy, and rich in fiber and phytonutrients, apples offer a bundle of health-promoting and disease-preventing properties including an impressive dose of quercetin, a flavonoid that may reduce cardiovascular disease. Stewed, baked in a pie, or as simple as a wash-and-munch snack, apples are awesome!
Hawk’s Wing Organic Farm and Orchard in Yarmouthport has 1,000 fruit trees lovingly tended by farmer/owner Bill Snowden, including peach, pear, and apple (an impressive eight varieties). Every fall weekend, the farm offers apple picking and much more. Hawk’s Wing also features a full-service farm store, fresh non-boiled apple cider, cider donuts, face-painting for kids, and a farm market with pumpkins. Picking is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is even a hay bale pyramid for the kids and a petting zoo!
