Shellfish is at its zenith in the fall. Among the best of the crop is the oyster – low in fat and high in protein, omega-3 fatty acids, minerals, and vitamin B12. Whether on the half shell, simmered in chowder, or baked in a casserole, the sweet-salty tango of oysters on the taste buds is divine.
For a great autumn afternoon, be sure to catch the Wellfleet Oyster Fest, held October 13–14 on Main Street in Wellfleet. Staged by the nonprofit organization SPAT (Shellfish Promotion and Tasting), the festival features the Oyster Shuck-Off, a stiff competition of amateurs and professionals that always promises great fun and gusto. wellfleetoysterfest.org
