SETTING THE STAGE // harwich
Harwich Junior Theatre is a community theatre in the fullest sense, and from the beginning, Cape Codders have been the backbone of the theatre. They continue to support all its endeavors as volunteers, teachers, actors, and directors, and for the past 61 summers all these efforts have helped to put on nationally recognized performances. “The 2013 season at HJT is going to be totally enchanting and spellbinding,” says Producing Artistic Director Nina Schuessler. This season’s performances include Rapunzel, The Hobbit, and The Borrowers. Tickets can be purchased over the phone, online, or in person, and are $20 to 25 for adults, and $15 for children under 21.

BEHIND THE WHEEL //dennis
Becoming an accomplished potter requires a degree of effort and sacrifice reserved for a precious few. But what if you aspire to creative greatness and you don’t want to miss prime beach hours? Head to the Cape Cod Museum of Art in Dennis, where veteran ceramicist Nat Doane offers a series of Four-Day Workshops for Beginning Pottery throughout the summer. This crash course encompasses the basics of centering clay and all the necessary techniques to form functional pottery on a wheel; in the process, students create enough cups, plates, and bowls to fill a kitchen cabinet. And don’t worry about making the occasional mistake: In the end, Nat says, “It’s just dirt.” Each four-day session runs from 3 to 5 p.m. in the museum’s clay studio, and costs $175 to $190 (materials fee included). Sessions take place on July 8 to 11, July 15 to 18, July 29 to August 1, and August 12 to 15.
