Public FTP

The information below describes a particular method for accessing our Cape Cod Life public server. A basic understanding of computer applications is required. Please read all instructions carefully and be respectful of our public server.

Connecting to the Cape Cod Life server (with FTP)

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol, which is the method we use to send data to and from our servers. This tool is provided for clients, photographers, writers, and other contributors to Cape Cod Life Publications.

FTP operates on a client/server model. What that means is you will need a client program to access the server. FTP client applications are available as both desktop and web applications. While web-based clients are known for their convenience, they generally limit the upload file size (less than 5mb).

You will need a desktop FTP client to access the Cape Cod Life servers. Below are links to free ftp clients for Mac OSX, Windows XP/7, and Linux. Please make sure your computer meets the minimum requirements for the software you choose.

Once you have installed an FTP program, either download an automatic configuration (recommended) or configure the FTP connection manually.


Configuration Files

Please use one of the following configuration files and the instructions below to automatically connect to our Public FTP.

  1. Download the file that matches the FTP software you have installed by right-clicking on the filename below.
  2. Double-click the file to automatically launch a new connection. If prompted, enter the password that was provided to you.
  3. Bookmark this new connection for future access (until the password is updated).
Right-click (control-click) on a file below and select “Save as” to download the file.

When you have connected successfully, you can begin adding files to the FTP.

Manual Configuration

The following instructions will be for Cyberduck. I will keep to the basic steps since the process is similar for all of these programs. If you need program-specific help, please use the resources in the links above.

  1. Install the software and launch the program.
  2. When the program starts up, click the “Open Connection” button in the top left of the opening window. Open Connection
  3. Fill in the required ftp address and user credentials. Login Credentials
  4. Please use the ftp address, username, password supplied to you by the production team or sales rep.
  5. If prompted to enter an initial directory, leave this field blank. The guest access will automatically route you to the appropriate folder.
  6. Our public connection does not require encryption(SSL) so please click “Continue” or “Allow” when presented with an untrusted certificate dialogue. Allow Connection

When you have connected successfully, you can begin adding files to the FTP.

Adding Files to the FTP

  1. From the File menu, select “New Folder” to create a new directory for your files. Make New Folder
  2. The folder name should contain your full name and a 2-3 word description of the folder contents. Name Folder
  3. Double-click the folder to open that directory. The folder itself should be empy. Open New Folder Directory
  4. Using your finder, locate the files that need to be uploaded. Drag the files from the finder directly onto the Cyberduck folder window. The program may require a security validation. Be sure to click “Trusted” or “Allow.” When the files has finished uploading, they will be listed in your new directory. Upload Media
  5. Congratulations! You have successfully uploaded your media to Cape Cod Life server. At this time , you may notify the production department of your new uploads at production@capecodlife.com. Logout or Quit
