Locally grown produce, freshly baked treats, and handmade crafts and products are just a sampling of what can be found at Sustainable Nantucket’s Farmers & Artisans Market, held downtown on Cambridge and North Union Streets, Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., through October 15.

Participating farmers, crafters, and other vendors are all Nantucket residents, and the products for sale are all produced on the island by the vendors themselves. Popular fall offerings include pumpkins and squash, and hand-knit wool clothing to help patrons stay warm as the leaves change.

According to Yeshe Palmo, the organization’s community agriculture program coordinator and market manager, many of the participating vendors see great success while at the market and are eventually able to move their small businesses to larger venues.

“This is part of our mission,” she says “to help make the local economy and resident Nantucketers successful, by giving them a venue to incubate and grow their small businesses.”

Yeshe Palmo says each vendor offers unique products with their own individual tastes. One company, Sweet Samba operated under Cris Costa, bakes Brazilian-style Portuguese cheese bread along with artisanal chocolates. Another vendor, Small Town Girl run by Taylor Cullen, is well-known locally for her handmade flavored caramels and sauces.”

The vendors are happy to chat with visitors about how their produce and products are grown or made. “It’s educational and it’s authentic,” Yeshe Palmo says of the farmers and artisans market. “I think that heartfelt connection is much of what people remember after they leave.”
