The Village Toy Store Is All About the Magic Of Fun

For 27 years, The Village Toy Store in Brewster has been a beloved staple on Cape Cod, bringing joy, creativity, and hands-on learning to generations of children. For the past 11 years, the “Fun Store on the Second Floor” (a reference often used by children) has been owned and operated by Sherry and Mark Bergeron. Sherry’s business philosophy is best summed up in her own words: “First and foremost, I love people, and so I just take it from there.”

Unlike large retailers, The Village Toy Store takes a special pride in offering a carefully curated selection of classic toys that are both educational and stimulating. Their inventory reflects a focus on quality, durability, and developmental value—featuring puzzles, building sets, stuffed animals, and games designed to inspire curiosity and creativity in children of all ages. Sherry grins, “I like to say that we have toys for newborns through age 108!” A quaint little section of the shop is devoted solely to the tiniest among us, brimming with lovingly chosen items of cozy clothing, keepsake books, cuddly blankets, and plushy friends.

The store is the top seller of Cape Cod Opoly™—made by long time Barnstable resident, Brian Giblin— a property trading board game that features the Cape and Islands. A new beach edition has been recently released, making the board games cherished keepsakes for residents and visitors alike. The Bergerons also own The Village Trading Company, a popular gift shop located in Cataumet, where the board game is also available for purchase

Sherry shares, “I don’t worry too much about trends, I like to focus on being a classic toy store. I buy from the heart.” With that in mind, she stocks everything you could ever want for a quintessential beach day on the Cape, from boogie boards and sand pails to snorkels and goggles, balls of every shape, size and function, and bats too!  And if a raindrop should fall and beach plans must be postponed, The Village Toy Store has interactive craft kits and board games galore. Every item on the shelves is handpicked with care and reflects her belief that play is an essential part of learning. Toys have the potential to play a large role in important developmental skills such as decision-making, logic, creativity, communication, and motor skills.

Donations are made to various organizations throughout the year however the primary annual initiative is the “Stuff a Cruiser” event, held on the Saturday of Brewster’s Home for the Holidays weekend in early December in partnership with the Brewster Police Department. During the event, every toy purchased from The Village Toy Store is placed in the cruiser and is matched dollar for dollar by the store. All donated items are then delivered to Lower Cape Outreach.

With its year-round, welcoming atmosphere and focus on purposeful play, The Village Toy Store continues to be a treasured destination for families looking for quality toys and heartfelt service. In an ever-increasing digital world, this charming, brick-and-mortar gem remains a beacon of imagination on the Cape.
