What a Wonderful World
Seeing the soul of Cape Cod through the lens of Tom Riley.
With his signature raspy and textured voice, Louis Armstrong sang about skies of blue and clouds of white, painting scenes of a “bright blessed day” and a “dark sacred night” inviting us to notice life’s simple rhythms and feel gratitude for their beauty. The heartfelt lyrics reflect photographer Tom Riley’s deep appreciation for the natural beauty of Cape Cod.
So many of Riley’s earliest memories revolve around Cape Cod summers at his grandparents’ home—days filled with beach outings, exploring the area with childlike wonder, trips to a mini golf course and sharing special meals together. “From an early age, Cape Cod represented happiness to me, an idyllic coastal escape. Going over the bridge has always felt like entering paradise and it still feels just as special today,” he shares.

When the pandemic cut Riley’s senior year of college short, causing uncertainty in his future, he decided to move to Chatham, but what unfolded wasn’t on his life’s bingo card: “That summer and the quieter off season that followed completely changed my relationship with the Cape. I discovered a different kind of beauty here, one that was peaceful, reflective, and deeply inspiring.”
Gifted a camera as a child, his early interest in photography began while watching his father document the family’s highlights, “I was fascinated with the idea that moments could be captured and replayed, whether on our family computer or as physical prints.
