Mission
Cape Cod Life, LLC publishes Cape Cod LIFE, Cape Cod HOME, Cape Cod ART, Cape Cod DOG, and the Cape Cod Life Seascapes Calendar. We are a regionally-inspired publication which strives to share the special character and charm of the Cape, Islands, Southcoast and South Shore region. Highlighting locally talented individuals, businesses, and happenings keep the publications fresh, current and informative, against a backdrop of established departments like our Pages of History, LIFE’s Canvas, and Photo Portfolio features. Additionally, our online presence provides a portal for mutual communication with our audience and newcomers to our brand. At the core of our efforts is the belief that with accurate and compelling presentation of local stories, we strengthen and enrich the community we hold dear.
History
Brian Shortsleeved founded Cape Cod Life Publications over 45 years ago—the very first lifestyle magazine of its kind in the region.
He grew up vacationing on Cape Cod, spending idyllic summers at Craigville Beach where he learned to sail when he was 12; leading to successful entrepreneurships in the areas of sailing instruction and sailboat rentals. During his years at Boston College High School and Holy Cross College he pioneered his salesmanship and publishing skills while working on the school newspaper and producing a student telephone directory. After college, Brian worked for Cahners Publishing, a national publishing company based in the Boston area, where he honed his skills that inspired him to combine his love of the Cape and the Islands with his interest in publishing and started Cape Cod LIFE magazine in 1979.
Every issue since 1979 has honored his unique appreciation for the region through his personal column, Gunk’holing where his thoughts and reflections of life on the Cape, and milestones experienced by his family, attracted a highly engaged following.
His love of photography and local scenes were always at the core of the magazine’s success as the images captured by a legion of photographers graced the pages of every issue. To acknowledge and promote the pursuit and enjoyment of local photography, he launched an Annual Photo Contest in 1986, and each year published the winning photos in the magazine.
In 1992 he introduced Cape Cod Life’s Annual Best of Cape Cod & the Islands Readers’ Choice Awards—recognized today as the longest running “Best of” awards in the region.
The wave of appreciation for the Cape & Islands Brain Shortsleeve fostered is vast and wide and shows no indication of losing momentum—to that end, the Cape Cod Life team is dedicated to honoring Brian’s life of work and continuing his legacy through our various media channels that share our collective love for this special place.
