Celebrating Edward Hopper’s legacy on Cape Cod

In 1930, Edward Hopper and his wife Jo, spent their first summer in South Truro on Cape Cod. Having traveled through many states and France, the couple built a home on a bluff overlooking Cape Cod Bay.

In honor of Hopper’s enduring legacy on the Cape and beyond, the Cape Cod Museum of Art and artists from across the country are joining with the Addison Art Gallery of Orleans and other regional organizations for “After Hopper,” a celebration of work by contemporary artists inspired by Edward Hopper and Cape Cod. Plans for this celebration include six exhibitions of new en plein air and studio works, receptions, demonstrations, artist panels, and talks by Hopper experts.

According to Edith A. Tonelli, director of the Cape Cod Museum of Art, “It is exciting for us to partner with Helen Addison and the Addison Art Gallery to encourage the historic tradition of en plein air painting on Cape Cod. This project, which involves asking artists to create new works of art inspired by Hopper and the places he painted is in line with our mission to inspire artists and exhibit art that is connected to our region. These exhibitions and events are also intended to spark a dialogue about contemporary painting and its ties to historic and global artistic traditions.”

Helen Addison, owner of the Addison Art Gallery, says, “The impact Hopper’s work has on contemporary artists and the market is rising with international coverage and soaring auction prices. Our region’s high regard for historic architecture combined with our natural environment (protected by the expansive Cape Cod National Seashore) makes this the ideal place for artists and art lovers to get a deeper understanding of Hopper’s work and influences. ‘After Hopper’ celebrates the integral part he, as an artist, has played in our country’s artistic heritage, and the effects his work has on today’s painters, as well as the essential part played by those preserving our artistic traditions.”

Elizabeth Rowley Gallery: A new name and an expanded location

After many years as a successful Orleans gallery, the Elizabeth Rowley Gallery has a new name—and an exciting new addition for a roster of artists widely collected on the Cape and beyond.

In honor of her father, Eugene Munn, who supported her artistic endeavors for decades, Elizabeth Rowley has renamed her gallery Munn Fine Arts. Also, making the most of her annual winter stay in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Rowley has recently established an innovative cross-marketing concept for the gallery’s collectors and the artists she represents.

“For years, many of my collectors with Cape Cod and Fort Lauderdale homes have been asking if any of the artists in our Cape gallery ever paint Fort Lauderdale images in the Impressionist style,” says Rowley. “Last summer, I approached some of the en plein air artists who spend the winter in Florida. Everyone seemed excited and all wanted to give the Florida paintings a try.”

Rowley notes that the artists started small with 8” x 10” oils. “In addition to selling a number of the Florida paintings to our loyal collectors through our web site, munnfinearts.com, I knocked on the doors of local Florida businesses,” Rowley says. “Jeff Rudd, owner of ‘The Treasure Trove,’ not only bought two paintings, but called a number of the other business owners in the neighborhood and gave me a verbal introduction, which helped me sell even more paintings.” Rowley says the experience was a wonderful opportunity for Munn’s artists to be able to sell paintings in the winter when her Orleans gallery is closed.

“On Abstraction” exhibit at Tao Water Gallery

In conjunction with the publication this spring of Deborah Forman’s book, Contemporary Cape Cod Artists: On Abstraction (Schiffer Publishing, 2015), the Tao Water Art Gallery in West Barnstable curates an exhibit of works through June 23, by a selection of artists included in the book. Forman has been an accomplished art critic of the Cape Cod art scene for more than 30 years. “In the past two years, we have done two large successful shows based on Forman’s previous books on Cape Cod’s art and artists,” says a Tao Water spokesperson. “When we met Debbie a few years ago, we came up with the idea of an exhibit related to artists in her books, so that we can showcase the work of the accomplished artists working on Cape Cod.” For more information, visit taowatergallery.com or call 508-375-0428.

Call for Artists to benefit care centers

The Falmouth Artists Guild invites artists to take part in, “Give the Gift of Art and Healing,” a juried lobby exhibit at the Falmouth Art Center. This fundraiser benefits the Art Program at Falmouth Hospital, JML Care Center, Heritage at Falmouth, and other Cape Cod Healthcare facilities. Melissa Woringer, art consultant for Cape Cod Healthcare, will jury the submissions. Gallery 31 summer exhibitions

Gallery 31 Fine Art of Orleans, located in the heart of the Orleans village center, offers a number of 2015 summer receptions and exhibitions. Every Saturday evening from late June through Labor Day, join the gallery from 4:30-6:30 p.m. for opening receptions of featured artists. The public is always invited and there are opportunities to watch demonstrations and chat with the artists. “Glistening Waters,” an exhibit of new oil and pastel paintings featuring the sun, sand, and shore by Deborah Quinn-Munson will be on display through June 26. Bringing Cape Cod together, piece by piece

The Cape Cod Collaborative Arts Network (CapeCodCAN!) is an organization working with disabled young people and adults providing an outlet for their creativity in both visual and performing arts.

One hundred and fifty disabled adults served by the organization undertook an extensive mosaic project, titled Bringing Cape Cod Together, Piece by Piece, with the support of Cape Cod Five Cents Bank, the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod, Cape Cod Express, and other donors. Five pieces of the mosaic were displayed at Cape Cod Five branch offices during the month of April. Eventually, all five pieces will be brought together at the Hyannis Transportation Center in an 8 foot x 9 foot mosaic mural, which will remain at the center as a colorful welcome to Cape Cod.

“Cape Cod Five has been instrumental in helping to make this happen,” says Melinda Gallant, Project Manager for CapeCodCAN! “The disabled artists worked with the guidance of artists Tessa Agostino and Cris Reverdy. This mosaic of 6” by x 6” decorated tiles—is truly inspirational.” The public is invited to attend an unveiling on June 24 at 4 p.m. at the Hyannis Transportation Center, 215 Iyannough Road, Hyannis. Painting workshops offered at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod

The Cultural Center of Cape Cod, located in South Yarmouth, offers a number of drawing and painting workshops for the summer season. Join nationally renowned artist Christopher Zhang for a two-day portrait workshop on June 6 and 7 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The workshop, featuring a live model, will begin with a demo, followed by students creating their own works. Tuition is $240. Artist Betsy Payne Cook will run pastel painting classes, for beginner and intermediate levels, every Tuesday afternoon from 2 to 4 p.m., July 14 to August 18. Each class will begin with an introductory lesson, and there will be plenty of opportunity for individual feedback. Students will spend some time painting outdoors, weather permitting. Addison Art Gallery summer exhibitions announced

The Addison Art Gallery, located in Orleans at 43 South Orleans Road will host a number of events and exhibitions this summer season. Join Addison on June 13 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. for “Painting East Orleans,” an opportunity to see local artists create en plein air works. That evening, enjoy a reception to meet the artists and see their freshly painted works. Addison will also host a one woman show with artist Sharon McGauley on June 27, featuring a series of paintings focused on beachgoers getting lost in the seascape. On July 11, Paul Schulenberg, a critically acclaimed and internationally collected oil painter, will have an opening for his one man show. New exhibit at the Edward Gorey House

The Edward Gorey House, located at 8 StrawberryLane in Yarmouthport, opens for its 13th season with the exhibit, “From Aesop to Updike: Edward Gorey’s Book Cover Art & Design” which focuses on illustrative work that Gorey created for a variety of authors. The exhibit, which will run through December 27, spans over five decades of Edward Gorey’s commercial illustration career, a substantial body of work that is in addition to his 100-plus books.

Premier glass artist at Sandwich Glass Museum

At the Sandwich Glass Museum, the exhibit Roger Gandelman, Return to the Age of Excellence will be on display through June 28. Gandelman, who specializes in perfume bottles, is a premier American glass artist, and has devoted his artistic efforts into making these objects. Paletteworks exhibit at Cooke’s Seafood in Orleans

Through October 20, visit Cooke’s Seafood at 1 South Orleans Road, Orleans to view a presentation by Paletteworks titled Sculpting in Oil Paint, which features palette knife paintings by Cape Cod artist Stephen Roth. The Artist Cottages at Orleans Market Square

Applications are now being accepted for artists and artisans interested in participating in the “Shoulder Season Weekend Cottages,” which run every weekend in June and Labor Day weekend. High quality works that are handmade or handcrafted by local Cape Cod artists are featured in the cottages. Eastham’s “Hands On the Arts Festival”

Eastham will hold its 17th annual “Hands On the Arts Festival” on June 20 and 21. The festival will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will be held rain or shine. Arts and crafts vendors working in mediums such as jewelry, pottery, watercolor, stained glass, weaving and more, will show their work and guests will have a chance to purchase work from the artists directly. Wyeth family exhibit at Heritage Museums & Gardens

Heritage Museums & Gardens, located in Sandwich,will host an exciting special exhibit, The Wyeths: America Reflected, from June 6 to September 27. The exhibit showcases works by all three artists in the Wyeth family, N.C., Andrew, and Jamie Wyeth—three generations of exceptional American painters. N.C. Wyeth’s 16 oil paintings from “Poems of American Patriotism,” Andrew Wyeth’s iconic American landscapes, and images by Jamie Wyeth that examine human’s preoccupation with mystery and mortality will all be displayed in the Special Exhibitions Gallery at Heritage. 45 paintings and works of art on paper from private and museum collections will  be featured. “The Fine White Line” exhibit at Provincetown Museum

“The Fine White Line: Faces Behind the Prints,” a new exhibit for the 2015 season at the Provincetown Museum, is a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the “Provincetown Print.” Provincetown is America’s oldest active art colony, and this exhibit, running through November 30, showcases an important and revolutionary American printmaking art form, created in Provincetown in the early 20th century. The exhibit is curated by Bill Evaul, a contemporary master of the woodblock print and art historian. In addition to the portraits of the early leaders of this art form, the exhibit also includes a video demonstration by Evaul and a block in the progress of printing.
