A Provincetown “Nautical Nest” by designers Herbert Acevedo, and Kevin Miller of Shor Home, captures the rhythm of the sea through color, craft, and curated design.

In a town defined by light, water, and a kind of creative freedom that resists constraint, small spaces often hold the biggest surprises. Tucked along the waterfront in Provincetown, a modest 350-square-foot retreat has been transformed into something far greater than its footprint might suggest—a luminous, layered interior that feels at once tailored and effortless, playful and precise. Designer Herbert Acevedo, co-founder of Shor Home, refers to it simply as a “nautical nest.” But in practice, it reads more like a carefully polished gem.

“It’s small,” Acevedo says with a laugh, “but it lives big.”

That sense of expansiveness—of possibility within constraint—became the guiding principle for the project. The homeowner, drawn initially to Acevedo’s retail space and its curated mix of home accessories, recognized a point of view that extended beyond objects. If the showroom was any indication, this was a designer who understood not just how things looked, but how they lived together. The commission followed naturally.

What Acevedo and his husband, architect Kevin Miller—his partner in both life and work—encountered was a space with potential but little poetry. The goal was not to reinvent it entirely, but to sharpen it: to bring in light, refine its function, and create a cohesive narrative that would feel both fresh and enduring. In a town where real estate is at a premium and scale is often limited, every decision would need to do more than one thing.
