As Brian passes the mantle to me for his Gunk’holing column, I am both honored and cautiously respectful of the reflections he has shared with all of us for decades.

In the heart of the National Seashore, Highland Light Station anchors the Highland Links Golf Course on a bluff in Truro.

Continuing with our recent Gunk’holing discussions about some iconic spots to capture quintessential, and sometimes unknown vistas across the Cape and Islands. Joshua Shortsleeve has snapped some unique perspectives at Truro’s Highland Light. For those who have never been to the oldest and tallest lighthouse built on Cape Cod, or haven’t visited for a very long time, it is definitely worthy of bucket list placement.

Gratefully yours,

Whether you climb to the top of the lighthouse, or just enjoy the expansive views from the ground, Cape Cod Light (as it was originally named) and the surrounding grounds make for a memorable visit. Go to highlandlighthouse.org for hours and information.

gunk’holing is the art of getting a boat into any small shallow cove, forbidden to boats of deeper draft and out again, without running aground much over a dozen times. — J. Benjamin
