Whenever my human says, “We’re headed to Agway!” my tail starts wagging because I know I’m in for a treat (or three). There’s always something new to sniff, friendly faces to greet me, and an endless supply of toys, treats, and gear for pups like me. But have you ever wondered who’s behind all the magic at Agway of Cape Cod? I did! So, I put my best paw forward and sat down with Jess Thomas, the co-owner, CEO, and pet supplies buyer, to get the inside scoop straight from the top dog (well, human).

Jess, I hear you’re a Dog Mom! How does having pups of your own help you understand what dogs like me—and our humans—really need at Agway?

Being a Dog Mom is at the heart of everything I do! My own pets are my toughest critics, so I only bring in pet food and products I trust for them. I look at everything through a pet parent’s lens: Is it safe? Will it help? Would I recommend it to my friends? That approach shapes our product selection and the welcoming, judgment-free vibe at Agway. I want every customer, human or canine, to feel cared for, heard, and part of our extended family.

I’m a Lab who loves tugging on my leash during walks. Do you have any harness tips for a strong dog like me?

For strong pullers like Labs, I recommend a front-clip harness. It gives your human more control and helps discourage pulling without putting pressure on your neck. Make sure it’s properly fitted for comfort and safety. We’re always happy to help with fittings in our stores. A good harness can make every walk more enjoyable for both you and your human!

I love joining my family on all sorts of adventures, even boat rides! What essentials does Agway carry to help keep me safe and cool during all our outings?

For outings, especially boat rides, safety and comfort are key. We carry Baydog life jackets to keep you safe on Cape Cod’s busy waterways. It’s important to stay off the bow when your human is traveling fast. For staying cool, we have Pelsbarn cooling mats and Baydog cooling collars, perfect for hot days. For hot pavement, I recommend paw protectors and balm; they make all the difference for summer walks. And don’t forget a portable water bowl so your humans can keep you hydrated wherever you go.

All that salt and sand makes me a bit stinky and sometimes itchy after summer play. How can my human help keep me fresh and comfortable?

I know that feeling! After a beach day, my own pup needs a serious rinse. I love Skout’s Honor probiotic shampoo and deodorizer because they’re gentle, effective, and leave your coat shiny and fresh. I also tell customers to keep chlorhexidine spray on hand for hot spots or irritated ears; those issues can pop up fast, especially in summer.

My human says I need to take care of my joints and paws if I want to keep exploring Cape Cod. What do you recommend for keeping me healthy and comfortable all year long?

I’m super picky about what goes on our shelves. If it’s not good enough for my own pets, you won’t see it at Agway. We carry joint supplements that are tried and tested and Jess-approved, especially for active breeds like Labs. Our staff can show you exactly what you’ll need for all your adventures, from nose to tail.

Jess, what makes shopping at Agway of Cape Cod special?

When you shop at Agway, you’re supporting a local business. My brother Josh and I are proud to be third-generation co-owners, carrying on our family’s business. Our pet frequent buyer clubs reward your loyalty and help your human earn free pet food, treats and even toys for you.
