A New Take on Tradition

On Cape Cod, the most successful homes often strike a careful balance: they honor the architectural traditions that give the region its unmistakable character while embracing materials capable of standing up to the realities of coastal living. With AZEK Exteriors, available through Mid-Cape Home Centers, builders and homeowners are discovering they don’t necessarily have to choose between the two.

AZEK siding offers the familiar appearance of traditional wood siding in an engineered polymer product designed to resist moisture, rot and insects while requiring considerably less maintenance. For homes exposed to the Cape’s fluctuating temperatures, moisture and demanding coastal conditions, those performance characteristics can make the material particularly appealing. Mid-Cape describes AZEK siding as providing the classic beauty of wood with long-term durability and resistance to moisture absorption.

But performance is only part of the equation. Increasingly, exterior siding has become another tool in the designer’s palette.

Although compact in footprint, the ADU was thoughtfully designed to feel distinctive and substantial, with a dramatic roofline and a mix of traditional and contemporary details.

On the exterior, AZEK Board & Batten and Lap Siding are combined, allowing changes in texture and profile to give the small structure architectural depth. A TimberTech deck connects the ADU to the primary residence, both physically and symbolically, since the home was created to allow two generations of the family to live independently while remaining close to one another.

The project demonstrates one of AZEK’s greatest design strengths: traditional siding profiles can be mixed to create an exterior that feels layered and custom rather than uniform. Board and batten introduces strong vertical lines,...
