Opening in 2003, Paine’s Patio is a natural descendent of the famous Boston-based Paine’s Furniture, which started in 1835.

Doug Shearer says that growing up, the last thing he wanted to do was go into the family business, but he soon discovered it was in his blood. “I grew up around the business, so I guess it was inevitable,” he says. Shortly after Paine’s Furniture closed its Natick store, Shearer and his wife, Kristin, opened their outdoor furniture store in Bourne.

He says there have been some significant changes in the business over the years. “When we first opened, 70 percent of our sales were dining sets—a table and six chairs. It is almost the polar opposite today, with 70 percent of our sales encompassing sofa, or chat-group, seating,” Shearer says. “There is a big demand for deep-cushion seating compared to dining sets,” he adds.

Technology has played a significant role in outdoor furniture trends, Shearer notes. “We’ve moved from aluminum-sling furniture, to composite materials that are much more weather resistant,” he says. With materials like Sunbrella fabric on the market, Shearer says, today’s outdoor furniture is a beautiful, durable addition to any outdoor living space and a solid investment.

In terms of color and what will be popular in 2016, Shearer notes that traditional blues will continue to dominate the Cape and Islands region. “This includes all shades of blues, from navy to blue-grey, to blue-green,” he says. While red is a hot color nationally, Shearer says, the color’s popularity hasn’t made it to this region. “I guess people want colors that reflect the beautiful surroundings of Cape Cod.”
