Three-time award winner

The idea of blending in while standing out is one that Polhemus Savery DaSilva Architects Builders (PSD) explores with every house they design and build. The Cape Cod-based integrated architecture and construction firm works to create homes that become part of their surroundings but also have their own identity.

“Everything we do is unique to its location,” says Aaron Polhemus, president and CEO of PSD. “All of our homes are custom designed for the distinct places in which they exist—that’s what makes our work special.”

The three homes for which PSD won gold in the 2016 BRICC Awards—House on Champlain’s Bluff, Hen House and Riptide—each exemplify the ability to both blend in and stand out.

At just over 10 acres, the site for House on Champlain’s Bluff is one of the largest in Chatham. To take advantage of the site’s exposure to Stage Harbor and Monomoy Island beyond, Polhemus explains that PSD designed the 6,900 square-foot family house in a “half butterfly” layout. “The design consists of two wings that extend out in a way that takes maximum advantage of the fabulous views,” he says. “It’s a classic, coastal New England home that really fits into its environment, yet the interior of the home is contemporary and dynamic.”

Hen House • Excellence in Design & Construction of Specialty Rooms or Buildings

At 450 square feet, the Hen House may be at the opposite end of the scale spectrum, but it’s just as committed to its surroundings as House on Champlain’s Bluff. Polhemus says this Chatham guesthouse, nestled into a hill overlooking a marsh, is a fresh take on a classic coastal cottage, with an exterior and interior consisting of untreated natural wood. “The idea here was to provide beautifully appointed small spaces, like one might find on a boat,” Polhemus says. “It’s a space for guests to relax and have fun.”

Riptide • Excellence in Remodeling • Whole House Remodel or Large Addition

To realize the full potential of this iconic Chatham abode, PSD transformed Riptide from a house practically hidden in plain sight into a home that now commands attention and basks in its waterfront surroundings. See more on Riptide here.
