My whole life has been about the arts,” expresses Falmouth ceramicist Tina Newcombe. But sometimes when you’re busy living, those pursuits fall to the background; a notion the artist is aware of as she eventually found her way back to pottery in 2020. “I had all of this free time,” shares Newcombe. “I had only really dabbled with clay in my past but wanted to take some pottery classes.” Meeting House Clay in Cataumet was where she began to relight her kiln, attending classes regularly. “I was there all the time and just loved it. I found a way to pursue my passion for the arts and pottery within a community—my whole life changed,” she confirms.

Drawing inspiration from the world around her, Newcombe found herself experimenting with leaves, shells and other items found along the beach. “My work is varied and fluid in change, but truly influenced by nature as I love to embellish with imperfect textures,” the artist shares. “I’m always challenging myself and get excited about new things. Recently I’ve been working on making bigger pieces and throwing multiple pots, then fusing them together to make taller structures.” Through that fearlessness, Newcombe says she feels a sense of accomplishment when she can refine new techniques and styles.

“For me, throwing things on the wheel is a very meditative experience,” shares the Reiki Master. Every piece Newcombe creates is infused with Reiki Energy in hopes to share that same Zen experience with others. “It’s just putting positive energy into the work I do,” she smiles. “Everything has an energy and a feel to it. We all have that favorite mug we use for our coffee or tea, so I thought it was a nice way to have something you really enjoy physically, but also energetically.”
