As with most creatives, Lisa Rogers began painting at a very early age. After years of experimenting with mediums, styles and size, most of Rogers’ work today is on the smaller scale—miniatures that is—which was set in motion by a happenstance visit to an antique and consignment shop. “I stumbled upon this stunning brooch that resembled a little picture frame,” shares the parttime artist. “I went home, got out my acrylic paper, smallest paint brushes (found that I needed even smaller brushes, so I ordered some of those) and started painting a tiny miniature, then set it in the brooch.” After posting it on Facebook, Rogers laughs, “People went nuts for it.”
The miniatures allowed Rogers to simultaneously scratch her itch for jewelry making. On her Etsy page, you’ll find handcrafted coastal-inspired jewelry which is often set with her acrylic miniatures. “I like to draw people in for a closer look by creating these small little worlds,” says Rogers, whose smallest painting measures 11mm. “It’s not an expensive hobby, as I used very little paint to accomplish each piece.” A very delicate process, depending upon the size of the setting, Rogers will very lightly sketch her scene, inspired by photographs she has taken while exploring our region. “After that, I’ll just start free handing it,” explains the self-taught artist. “Acrylic dries very quickly, so I mix it with another medium that blends smoother and lasts longer. After I’ll coat it with protective varnish, carefully cut it out and mount the piece into the designated bezzle,” Rogers shares, as she expresses the joys found in the process itself continue to fuel her work as she grows as an artist.
