gunk’holing is the art of getting a boat into any small shallow cove, forbidden to boats of deeper draft and out again, without running aground much over a dozen times. — J. Benjamin

Now for 32 years Cape Cod Life has been publishing an annual issue reporting our readers’ opinions, by ballot, on the “Best of” businesses and experiences on Cape Cod & the Islands. This annual issue, in June, is very popular with our readers. This year, the latest issue, reports 63,301 readers’ votes for their favorite businesses including shops, restaurants, places to stay and entertainment choices of all types.

The photo on this page by Joshua Shortsleeve, was taken from the shoreline in front of the Chart Room restaurant in Cataumet. It looks over Red Brook Harbor and Bassetts Island to Scraggy Neck. I don’t remember any year when the Chart Room restaurant hasn’t been voted “One of The Best” by the Cape Cod Life readers. In addition to the views, one finds indoor and outdoor dining, piano music, great food and a very friendly and professional staff. This is typical of so many restaurants on the Cape & Islands. We are so fortunate to live in this beautiful area.

The annual issue includes 69 categories to vote for in each of the six regions: Upper Cape, Mid Cape, Lower Cape, Outer Cape, Nantucket, and Martha’s Vineyard.

Thank you very much to our faithful readers, please enjoy this year’s tally.

My Best,

Brian Shortsleeve
