From Orchard to Ocean, Try Cape Cod’s Take On Hard Cider

Some of the best ideas have been born from the two simple words “Why not?”  Those words, along with a love of Cape Cod, a nod to history and tradition, and the desire to create a crisp, refreshing cider here right in this special place sparked the creation of Sandy Neck Cider Co.

Norbert Sack and his wife Ulrike had cherished memories of times spent with their children at Sandy Neck Beach and Norbert’s longtime graduate school pal, Dave, had also passed many summer hours away on Cape Cod. Having grown up on a small hobby orchard, Norbert inherently believes in the concept of fresh, natural flavors and ingredients. What began as an interest evolved into a passion for home brewing and fermentation, an art he and Ulrike have honed over years of experimentation. A partnership with Dave—whose lengthy experience in operations management—was a perfect fit, and Sandy Neck Cider Co. was launched.

Founders: Dave, Ulrike and Norbert.

“The Cape is the most fantastic place in the world,” Norbert beams, “With the natural beauty and so much to do, we wanted to produce a cider that is deeply rooted in the Cape.” The cultivation of apples for hard cider dates back to colonial times, when cider was the drink of choice in America—found on tables throughout the Colonial and Revolutionary eras, long before the mid-1800s. Sandy Neck Cider Co. is the only cider company on Cape Cod, with four distinct flavors in their repertoire and representation in over 40 stores across the Cape and beyond.

“It’s important to us to have a traditional product, one that is clean, crisp and natural,” Norbert shares. The ingredients—sourced locally whenever possible—are minimal, and the resulting cider, blended and crafted on the Cape, is simple and fresh so the customer can taste the difference. From their Dennis facility with state-of-the-art equipment to their colorful, artistic cans to their logo steeped in coastal charm, every detail at Sandy Neck Cider Co. feels thoughtfully crafted and poised for summer beach days, cool fall afternoons and cozy snowy evenings.

Leslie Hatton

Leslie (Horne) Hatton enthusiastically joined Cape Cod Life in October of 2022. Educated in Mashpee and Falmouth, she graduated from Assumption College and received her Master of Education degree from Lesley College. A former teacher, she has taught middle school, preschool and most recently, fifth grade. She and her husband Tom have three children: Aidan, Colin, and Erin. Their newest family member is Millie, an outgoing, outrageously happy chocolate lab. She loves to talk about all of them so better not ask. One neat tidbit about Leslie is that she is the author of the locally best-selling children’s book Cape Cod ABCs, with over 10K books sold on Cape Cod, the Islands and across Massachusetts. Happiest in the summer with a little sun on her face, she loves being with friends and her family, laughing, drinking and eating all over beautiful Cape Cod.
