It may be November on Cape Cod, but for David Shinn, owner of VU Design, the interior design business is never off-season. Shinn, whose Hyannis firm and retail showroom provides high-end interior design services and furnishings to clients on the Cape and Islands, says it’s a good thing he really loves his profession.

Asked about his company’s success, Shinn says it all starts with great relationships between the customer and the designers. “The trust level is so important,” says Shinn, lead designer with a design staff of four. “Our approach is not aggressive; we want the customer to know that we will listen to them and respect their ideas.”

While the company’s spacious showroom in the heart of Hyannis, with several sophisticated design vignettes and high-end furnishings, is a source of inspiration for clients, Shinn notes that walk-in retail sales are not the company’s bread and butter. “We are a design firm, first and foremost,” he says “We have deliveries coming in all the time, which leads to our clients—and sometimes walk-in customers—buying items right off the floor. But the biggest growth in our business has definitely been in the full project interior design area.”

The designer stresses the importance of maintaining strong relationships with each client as key to VU Design’s on-going success. “If you establish great relationships and listen to each other, all will go well,” he says.
