A Tale of Five Rings, a multidisciplinary project by local artist Jennifer Odell, invites the reader into a world where craftsmanship and mysticism are combined into an enchanting journey. The book explores five of Odell’s most exquisite ring designs— featuring the emerald, ruby, aquamarine, pink sapphire and a black diamond—each accompanied by lyrical poetry that delves into the emotional and otherworldly essence of her creations.
Fellow artist, founder and director of Morgan Lehman Gallery in the West Chelsea art district in New York City, Sally Morgan Lehman, lets the reader know in the foreword that they are about to embark on a journey for the senses when she relays how Odell, “weaves together poetic and mystical writing with sensuous imagery,” and how, “this book brings to life her archetypal tale about character.”
Odell’s talents as both an artisan and a poet are evident throughout the book, a hardcover, bound in a crisp linen with gold lettering, sure to match any coffee table décor with its timeless and clean lines. Odell’s poetic tale describes each ring that is given to a young girl, presented by different female energies that are influenced by religion, mythology, and ancient cultures. Each ring is a delicate blend of gold and colorful stones used to symbolize the ethereal connection between her handmade creations and the mystical world; while each accompanying verse is paired with lush photographs of Odell’s rings in vivid detail. This combination of mediums allows for a seamless fusion of art and poetry. Alongside the images of the five rings are the evocative paintings by artist Elisa Johns. Morgan Lehman refers to her work as “delicate and mysterious”, saying, “In the paintings, the play of luscious brushstrokes on wide swaths of white canvas lays bare a convincing spontaneity of process.”
Through the esoteric experience, Odell invites us to see the world, and her adornments, with a sense of wonder—exploring and contemplating the significance of each ring, portrait and poem.
The book can be purchased at her gallery at 876 Main Street in Osterville or online at parisandlily.com. Odell is working on a new collection for an upcoming collaboration with artist Katherine Downey Miller called Two Girls and an Island; opening night will be June 29th at the artist’s Osterville location.
