For Connecticut-based interior designer Georgia Zikas, nothing happens by accident. With Massachusetts roots and plans to expand on Cape Cod, the path she has forged may not have been the one she envisioned for herself early on, but she is proud of what she has built and appreciates the people and experiences she has collected along the way. With her undergraduate degree in communications, encouragement from her family and a dose of bravery, Zikas opted to pursue what was always her passion and she dove headfirst to continue her studies at the New York School of Interior Design. Since then, she’s been building her business with deliberate and strategic moves and surrounding herself with people who mirror her zeal and gratitude. The Vice President of Educational Foundation on the Board of the IFDA, (International Furnishings and Design Association) for the New England Chapter, and recent spotlight on the Creative Genius podcast, she shares a little of her secret sauce for success.
CCH: What made you realize you were interested in interior design?
GZ: I always had a passion for design, but it wasn’t something that seemed to be in my path at the time that I was heading to college. I earned a bachelor’s of science degree in Communications from Suffolk University, but in my late twenties, my husband encouraged me to “go for it” and I enrolled at The New York School of Interior Design. I was living in New York City, working nights and weekends…there’s no such thing as an overnight success. I started at the D&D Building, then worked at a design firm on the Upper East Side.
