Cape Codders know too well the challenge of finding space to host visitors who arrive to share and enjoy the lovely Cape lifestyle. One solution to that problem is the iconic bunk bed, which evokes fond memories of vacations, summer camp stays, and sleepovers with friends.

“There has been rapid growth in demand for ‘bunk rooms’ by homeowners across the U.S.”, says Jim Steffensen, owner of Maine Bunk Beds. His woodworking shop, located in Buxton, Maine, is serving that demand by building a variety of solid wood, custom-made bunk beds. “The Cape has become a strong market for our bunks over the past several years as homeowners increasingly look for ways to comfortably host large gatherings of family and friends.” Customers have multiple options to choose from: twin-over-full bunks, queen-size bunks, triple and quadruple bunks, stairs or ladders, as well as different bed configurations.

“We employ some of Maine’s most talented woodworkers,” says Steffensen. “They take great pride in turning raw lumber into custom bunk beds. Because each bunk is built to order, they can be individually sized to fit into rooms with non-standard heights and shapes. “

“Customers are closely involved in the construction process. Each bunk bed is handcrafted to our customer’s exact specifications,” says Steffensen. “Before a bunk is turned over to the finishing room, we send images of unpainted bunks to our customers for their review and approval. There’s a fun energy that develops between our woodworkers and customers as they partner together to build a one-of-a-kind bunk bed.”

The company’s adult-strength bunk beds are made from sustainable materials and are compliant with design and safety standards set by the Consumer Products Safety Commission. Paints and finishes are also compliant with stringent standards set by the California Air Resources Board that govern air quality and off-gassing. While the company features paints and colors from Benjamin Moore, customers can specify any paint brand they prefer to match existing color motifs in their home.

“Our bunk beds are notable for their timeless design, strength, safety and stability,” Steffensen says. “We build bunks that are a perfect fit for our customer’s home and lifestyle.”
