Extraordinary Lighting

“I really enjoy going to a customer’s house and listening to their vision on how they want to transform the space into their home,” shares Steve Rice, founder of Eastham’s three lighting showrooms—Light & Living. “With 38 years of lighting experience worldwide, my goal is to provide direction and guidance on how my customer’s lighting will perform with flawless function in conjunction with stunning design.” From new, ground up construction, to various levels of remodel, Rice looks at each home with the objective of transforming that space into their own. Rice says that one of the biggest challenges for people when in comes to lighting their home is, “You don’t know what you don’t know.” He explains, “We work with 10 specific lighting vendors who are very unique in the way they approach their designs, incorporating different types of materials, a broad scales of fixtures, and different fabrication methods. As a result, when customers walk through our three Cape Cod showrooms they are taken back at how beautiful and unique our lighting collection is—and that these types of fixtures even exist at all.”

Recently wrapping up on a new construction contemporary project, Rice shares that he provided extensive decorative lighting for every inch of the home. “A lot of the direction we were given by the client was to complement the existing architecture,” he says. In order to accomplish this, he utilized Hubbardton Forge and Visual Comfort for the exterior and interior of the home.

According to Rice, their approach to the open floor plan project was a completely different design direction compared to any of their previous projects when it came to finishes. “It wasn’t so much paint by numbers, as it was about making the fixture a central focus, but still part of the overall design,” he explains. “In some cases we didn’t necessarily match finishes, we complemented them. From kitchen hardware with a totally different finish to the island fixtures or the dining pendant, which was adjacent to the kitchen.” Marrying the client’s personal style and utilizing their craftsman built lighting, the result was a not only a house transformed, but a home brought to life—simply by lighting. “Our lighting works extremely well with the different styles of homes on Cape Cod,” Rice confirms. “From mid-century modern to coastal farmhouse—we have the knowledge to create lighting results that complement and provide breathtaking results in every home we light! I welcome our new customers to Light & Living!”
