It’s been said often in the pages of our publications, but it bears repeating—we are lucky to call Cape Cod home. Its picturesque landscapes and vibrant cultural scene have long beckoned to artists to capture the essence of our unique and beautiful region through their work.

This highly anticipated Cape Cod ART issue, which we publish just once a year, features local artists who bring their distinctive style and perspective to our art community. In the following pages you will meet 21 prominent members of the local art scene as well as 4 emerging artists, all of whose talents represent the diverse creativity in this region.

The floral paintings of Jennifer McCalmont are perfectly calming, and her classic and detailed depictions of blooms exhibit her love for color. The contemporary landscape paintings of Paul Batch are his response to the beauty found in the seasons of New England, with a focus on the fleeting light. Born with the heart of an artist, Clara Clough’s work reflects her appreciation for the beauty found in hues that are all around her, which often includes local coastal vistas. Growing up on Cape Cod, Scott Panuczak‘s connection to the land and sea was formed early on and his oil landscapes reflect that reverence. A former art teacher, Elizabeth Lazeren Daglio, always knew she wanted to be an artist. Her style is characterized by her experiences as well as her imagination. A career change gave Tina Newcombe the opportunity to pursue her burgeoning passion as a potter. A gentle nudge from her mother as well as her children set Margie McGrail Michals on a path to sharing her talent and beautiful watercolor depictions. A true officer and a gentleman as well as an artist, Barry T. O’Neil’s work is quintessentially Cape Cod; his humility almost prevented him from sharing his incredible talent. A National Merit Scholar, Tom Ouellette brings a meticulous classical technique to his subject matter, whether in realistic still lifes or the human figure. Artist Linda Ryder is an inspiration to anyone with a zest for life and a willingness to challenge oneself to learn something new. Another art teacher and award-winning artist, Caryn Phipps paints coastal landscapes that resonate in her heart, mind, and memory.

Potter Jeff Adams shares his love for his craft through teaching courses at his studio where he creates unique and one-of-a-kind works of art. Mixing sea water from local beaches to create her uniquely beautiful work, artist Miriam Voros literally pours her heart into each piece. With the ocean and its coast as her muse, Whitney Alexanderson Heavey focuses on creating art that reflects how she feels in their presence. A plein air painter, Mary Nolan has dabbled in everything from basket weaving, collage and sculpture; and is now focused on creating oil paintings of local and regional landscapes. Cape Cod native Justin LaRocca Hansen is a bit of a Renaissance man in terms of his artistic talents; whether a fine artist, a children’s book creator, and even a novelist, he finds inspiration in being a storyteller in all of its forms. Another Cape Cod native, Sarah Hinckley feels strongly that the colors and shapes found in nature influence her work.

Local metal artist Tom Odell’s work has evolved over the span of three decades, from jewelry to maker of hollowware, utensils and sculpture. A lifelong learner, Odell’s hands have created many thought-provoking, beautiful pieces. Sharing her admiration for all things New England through her work, watercolorist Lisa Rogers’ current passion is for miniature paintings, a unique talent indeed. Painter Steve Kennedy finds beauty in what others may see as mundane or time-worn, bringing attention to otherwise overlooked subjects through his brushstrokes. Goldsmith Jennifer Odell has long been intrigued by mythology, ancient cultures and world religions and has found a way to intertwine her curiosities with her craftsmanship, resulting in remarkable and unique pieces. The uniquely talented Marie Fischer is known for her whimsical, figurative paintings featuring a range of subjects from still life to interiors or street scenes. For Steve Bowersock, exploring scenes from the imagination and creating unique dreamscapes on canvas is what propels and inspires him to share his work. Painter Paul Norwood strives to define his chosen forms in fewer strokes of bold, thick brushwork, challenging the viewer to use their mind’s eye to envision his subject matter.

Living on Nantucket, Lizbet Carroll Fuller’s work reflects her desire to explore, play and learn from all of the colors around that inspire her.

Though all of these talented artists have various processes, successes, and unique stories, they all possess the strong desire—thankfully—to share their gifts which ultimately enrich our lives.

Leslie Hatton

Leslie (Horne) Hatton enthusiastically joined Cape Cod Life in October of 2022. Educated in Mashpee and Falmouth, she graduated from Assumption College and received her Master of Education degree from Lesley College. A former teacher, she has taught middle school, preschool and most recently, fifth grade. She and her husband Tom have three children: Aidan, Colin, and Erin. Their newest family member is Millie, an outgoing, outrageously happy chocolate lab. She loves to talk about all of them so better not ask. One neat tidbit about Leslie is that she is the author of the locally best-selling children’s book Cape Cod ABCs, with over 10K books sold on Cape Cod, the Islands and across Massachusetts. Happiest in the summer with a little sun on her face, she loves being with friends and her family, laughing, drinking and eating all over beautiful Cape Cod.
